Livestock Guardian Dogs

Livestock Guardian Dogs play a critical role to protect livestock from predators. In North Florida, we have Coyote, Panthers, Bear, Fox, Bobcat, Racoons, and occasionally wild dogs and smaller predators. We decided on the Anatolian Shepherd as the LGD of choice for our farm. Anatolians descend from some of the oldest known domestic-canine bloodlines that go back over 6,000 years to the Bronze Age. Anatolians are smart, devoted and will protect their herd and owners with intensity.

We also have two Akbash/Great Pyrenees LGDs on our farm. Akbash is another Turkish breed that originates from the Anatolia region. Great Pyrenees are frequently used as LGDs and originate from the Pyrenean Mountains in France.

Turk

Turk is a powerful guardian of the goats in his care. From the hilltop he keeps watch over the farm, guarding against intruders of all kinds. Despite his protective nature, he is remarkably gentle with goat kids and is often seen resting while they climb all over him.

Lainer

Lainer is gentle with the goats but a fierce protector of the herd. Her instincts are especially evident during kidding season, when she stays close and alert to the goats. Lainer constantly watches the sky for hawks and other predators. Nothing enters the pasture without Lainer knowing before it enters.

Athena and Lagertha

Athena and Lagertha are Akbash/Great Pyrenees mixes from S&R Triple Bar Kikos. This bonded sister pair stays close to the goats in their care and is always quick to alert to any threat on the farm.

Gunnar

Oops, we did it again! Gunnar was the last puppy from Lagertha’s large litter, and we decided he should stay. He is being trained to guard Susan and any goats in his care. Though still young, he is already doing a great job.
