Livestock Guardian Dogs play a critical role to protect livestock from predators. In North Florida, we have Coyote, Panthers, Bear, Fox, Bobcat, Racoons, and occasionally wild dogs and smaller predators. We decided on the Anatolian Shepherd as the LGD of choice for our farm. Anatolians descend from some of the oldest known domestic-canine bloodlines that go back over 6,000 years to the Bronze Age. Anatolians are smart, devoted and will protect their herd and owners with intensity.
We also have two Akbash/Great Pyrenees LGDs on our farm. Akbash is another Turkish breed that originates from the Anatolia region. Great Pyrenees are frequently used as LGDs and originate from the Pyrenean Mountains in France.
Turk, an Anatolian Shepherd, is a fierce guardian of any goat in his care. From the hilltop, he watches over the entire farm and guards against intruders of all kinds. Although he is very protective, he is also extremely gentle with goat kids.
Lainer, an Anatolian Shepherd, is gentle with the goats, but also is a fierce protector. She has amazing instincts which she has demonstrated during kidding season. She likes to stay close by as goats are kidding, but also maintains a safe distance to allow the mom room to care for her new kids.
Athena and Lagertha are Akbash/Great Pyrenees LGDs. They guard our buck pasture and alert to any threat to the farm.
Oops, we did it again! Gunnar was the last puppy of a large litter Lagertha had this summer and we decided we wanted him to stay. Gunnar is an Anatolian Shepherd/Akbash/Pyrenees mix. He is being trained to guard Susan around the farm and any goats that are put into his care.
